Signs Your DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

• Rust stains running down the chimney chase. DuraFlex caps use 304 stainless, but the spot-welded seam where the hood meets the collar can trap condensation. In Ewing’s freeze-thaw cycles, that seam opens first. We see this most often on north-facing chimneys that never fully dry.
• Water in the firebox after rain. The mesh screen on DuraFlex caps is crimped under a compression band. When that band corrodes, the screen drops and creates a gap. Water follows the flue wall straight down. If you’re finding damp ash or a musty smell, the screen-to-band joint has failed.
• Debris or animal nesting material. A cap that has shifted even half an inch off plumb leaves an entry point. Squirrels in the Hillwood section of Ewing have pulled loosened mesh screens off entirely. The cap is doing nothing if it’s sitting crooked.

Where DIY goes wrong: measuring the flue diameter from inside the firebox instead of the flue top, ordering by nominal “chimney size” rather than actual inner diameter, and failing to bed the new cap in high-temp silicone.
