HeatShield Crown Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

HeatShield Crown Repair: The Ewing Owner’s Guide

HeatShield crown repair in Ewing typically runs $380-$650 installed, depending on crown size and whether the flue gas seal needs rebuilding underneath. We stock HeatShield Cerfractory Foam and the bonding agent on our trucks, and most Ewing jobs are completed in a single visit. Homeowners usually discover the problem during the first hard freeze, when a hairline crack they ignored in October opens enough to let water pool behind the gas fireplace or stain the ceiling near the chimney breast.

Which HeatShield Models This Applies To

HeatShield manufactures two distinct crown repair systems, and matching the right one matters. The CrownCoat brushable sealant works for surface cracking and minor spalling where the crown structure itself is sound. The Cerfractory Foam system, which we use more often in Ewing, rebuilds severely deteriorated or missing crown sections by injecting a refractory foam that hardens to a concrete-like finish rated to 3,000°F. To identify what you need, look at the crown edge: if you can flake pieces off with a screwdriver, you need the foam rebuild. If the surface is chalky but intact, CrownCoat may suffice.

HeatShield parts are not model-specific like a damper or cap. The compatibility question is crown geometry: flat, sloped, or curved, and how many flue tiles penetrate it. A single-flue chimney in the Hillwood section of Ewing takes roughly 45 minutes to mask and apply. A four-flue crown on a larger home near the Ewing Lawrence border along Bear Tavern Road needs more material and more cure time. We use HeatShield’s OEM bonding agent, not generic refractory cement, because the manufacturer’s warranty requires it. Hearthstone Chimney Co. is an independent service provider, not affiliated with HeatShield.

Signs Your HeatShield Crown Repair Is Failing

  • Water stains on the ceiling near the chimney. The crown’s primary job is to shed water away from the flue and the chimney structure. Once cracks penetrate the full thickness, water follows the path of least resistance down the flue chase and into the framing. In Ewing’s freeze-thaw climate, a crack that accepted water in November becomes a channel by March.
  • White efflorescence blooming on the exterior brick below the crown. This salt deposit means water is moving through the masonry, dissolving minerals, and evaporating at the surface. The crown is no longer doing its job of keeping water out of the top of the chimney.
  • Spalling or flaking concrete on the crown surface. HeatShield crowns are built from Portland-based concrete with embedded reinforcement. When the surface begins to scale, the freeze-thaw cycle has already compromised the matrix. Delaying repair invites structural damage to the brick courses below.
  • Rust stains on the chimney face from the flue tile. Water entering through crown cracks runs down the flue liner and rusts the metal damper or firebox components. By the time you see rust on the exterior, the interior damage is usually worse than it looks.
  • Loose or missing pieces at the crown edge. These are the drip edges and overhangs that direct water away from the masonry wall. Once they break off, water runs straight down the brick face, accelerating deterioration of mortar joints and leading to costly tuckpointing or rebuild work.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range
CrownCoat surface seal (single flue) $380-$480
Cerfractory Foam rebuild (single flue) $520-$650
Additional flue penetrations $75-$125 each
Flue gas seal replacement (if needed) $140-$220

The range reflects crown size, accessibility, and whether we need to rebuild the flue gas seal beneath the crown surface. Every Ewing estimate includes a Level-2 camera inspection with photos you can see, a plain-English verdict, and no-hassle upfront pricing: the number on the estimate is the number on the invoice. Our 90-Day Done Right Promise covers the work in writing, no arguing. We use HeatShield’s professional-grade materials exclusively, not builder-grade substitutes.

DIY or Call Us?

A homeowner can safely check the crown from the ground with binoculars for obvious cracking or missing pieces. You can also run a hose on the roof, though we don’t recommend climbing to do it. What you cannot safely assess is whether the crack is superficial or structural, whether the flue gas seal beneath has failed, or whether the crown slope is still adequate to shed water. The Cerfractory Foam system requires mixing to exact ratios, troweling to proper slope, and curing under controlled conditions. Done wrong, it traps moisture and accelerates the damage it was meant to stop.

We carry HeatShield materials on every truck, and most Ewing crown repairs are completed in one visit. Call (856) 388-5580 for a free estimate. We’ll be there when we say.
